The advent of the 1990 Care of Cathedrals Measure re-opens the whole area of `cathedral archaeology'. In the light of a major refurbishment programme at Salisbury, the history of this major Medieval Gothic structure is re-examined, concluding that evidence given for the inception and completion of the tower and spire points to it being built within about a century, c 1220 - 1320 AD.
