Abstract:
Despite its being one of the most intensively explored prehistoric monuments in western Europe, there are still questions about Stonehenge that have yet to be fully resolved. The present complex is the end product of a complicated sequence that is steadily being refined. However, Stonehenge in its present form is incomplete '“ some of the expected stones are missing '“ and it has sometimes been suggested that it was never complete. This article reports on the geophysical survey of some unusual parchmarks that appeared during a hot, dry spell in July 2013. Limitations of the survey are explained and the parchmarks themselves are then discussed; some are of known origin, whilst others represent previously unrecorded features. More research is needed to help interpret the features, but these transient parchmarks emphasise the potential for new discoveries about Stonehenge through non-invasive as well as invasive techniques.
