Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Coarse volume magnetic susceptibility sampling, fluxgate gradiometry, and resistivity survey were used to investigate a possible Roman villa site, which had been evinced by fieldwalking but not by aerial photography. Enhanced susceptibility measurements coincided with the general spread of artefacts. Detailed fluxgate gradiometry identified a series of ditched enclosures and areas of possible structural remains. Twin-probe resistance survey confirmed that the latter comprised three buildings (one a possible bath house). The confirmation of the site as a villa challenges the traditional view of the region as an Imperial estate. The paper also illustrates the value of complementary geophysical techniques in all archaeological research projects and highlights the limitations of magnetic susceptibility as a primary prospection tool. | |||||||
