Abstract:
Discusses a project by the department of archaeology at the University of Winchester, studying the history and development of the medieval leper hospital and almshouse of St Mary Magdalen. The history of leper hospitals is outlined and documentary evidence for the Winchester site, first mentioned in the mid-12th century, is described. The project has yielded a range of evidence that suggests hospitals may have their origins in late Anglo-Saxon society, including buildings and burials. Ongoing research could thus challenge long-held assumptions that the origins of such institutions lie in the later middle ages. Evidence for a First World War base at the site, one of the largest in Hampshire, was also excavated. LD
