Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
In 2009 SLR Consulting excavated a long stretch of a known Roman road near the village of Bayston Hill in Shropshire, in advance of the expansion of a quarry. One particular section of the road had remained remarkably intact; here, scientific dating delivered an unambiguous Iron Age date for construction of the road's first three phases. The uppermost metalled surface was also likely to have been pre-Roman. These findings, discussed in detail, have implications for the study of the impact of Romanisation on Britain's pre-existing infrastructure. Wider use of scientific dating in archaeological projects is advocated. LD | ||||||
