Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Describes investigation of the remains of a Tudor tavern in London. Previous evaluation at the site, at 60 Holborn Viaduct, had suggested that good archaeological preservation was unlikely. However, during a watching brief a 17th century cellar wall was exposed and further investigation revealed the remains of a building with medieval origins. Documentary research and finds enabled this to be identified as the Three Tuns, a tavern that had been destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666 and was rebuilt soon after. 16th century road surfaces of the adjacent thoroughfare, Snow Hill, and the remains of further buildings along the north side of this road were also uncovered.
