Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Large-scale archaeological excavation has been taking place at the Hanson brick pits near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, for two decades. This article begins by describing some of the findings from the waterlogged sediments of a later Bronze Age/earlier Iron Age watercourse, which have recently included six well-preserved log boats. Weirs, eel traps and metalwork finds such as swords and spears have also been recorded. The circumstances under which the fieldwork is taking place are described, emphasising the successful co-operation between the developer and the archaeological curator and contractors. The investigation of a Bronze Age timber structure and its contents is then described and the findings discussed in the wider context of the contemporary landscape '“ there are considerable parallels with discoveries at the nearby site of Flag Fen. A broader discussion then looks at how this rare opportunity to undertake open-area excavations at a deep level is allowing the drowning of the Flag Fen basin over time to be mapped, enabling the excavators to form an understanding of the effects of changing conditions on the occupation of the area during the Bronze Age.
