Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Outlines the history and purpose of London's blue plaque scheme, currently run by English Heritage, which identifies the houses of people of note with inscribed ceramic plates. A number of archaeologists are represented, including Sir Flinders Petrie, General Pitt-Rivers and Sir Mortimer Wheeler. Archaeologists and historians also feature on some of the thousands of plaques erected beyond London by a variety of other schemes and individuals. These include one at Finningham, Suffolk, commemorating John Frere, who wrote a letter acknowledged to constitute the first scientific recognition of both the nature of handaxes and the great antiquity of humanity. The article moves on to suggest a scheme to celebrate the early people of Britain themselves, listing seven key selection criteria and ten potential subjects for plaques. The latter include Boxgrove Man, the Red Lady of Paviland, Swanscombe Woman and Lindow Man. The proposed plaques would be coloured ochre red, and the reasons for this are explained. LD | |
