Abstract:
Soldiers from the Ministry of Defence's Operation Nightingale and archaeologists from the MoD and Wessex Archaeology are investigating 6th century burials at Barrow Clump near Durrington, Wiltshire. These form part of an Anglo-Saxon cemetery at the site of a group of Bronze Age barrows. Among finds is a small bucket or drinking vessel, made of wooden staves bound with copper alloy strips. Other notable grave goods have included four Roman brooches, most likely heirlooms. The significance of these finds is briefly discussed. LD
