Abstract:
Modern scientific archaeological work has completely transformed the study of Shakespearean playhouses, complementing and illuminating the diverse and often sparse documentary records, and illustrating life with a wealth of finds. Of the nine playhouses that existed in London between 1567, when the first one was built, and 1642, when Parliament closed them down, five have now been partially excavated by archaeologists, and two bear-baiting arenas have also been found. This article gives a historical account of all of these buildings, including a description of the findings at those sites where excavations have taken place. LD
