A collection of material that had been kept by General Augustus Pitt-Rivers (1827-1900) and his descendants, including photographs, illustrations, notebooks, letters and documents, has largely been donated to the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford by the General's great-grandson, and the remainder of the material has been temporarily loaned. Considered to be the 'father' of scientific archaeology, General Pitt-Rivers pioneered systematic excavation and also became the UK's first Inspector of Ancient Monuments, in 1882. This article outlines the importance of the collection and mentions some of its highlights. LD | ||
