Abstract:
Excavation by MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) in advance of development at the Minories near the Tower of London had recorded the partial remains of a medieval nunnery. Towards the end of the project the remains of a small Roman structure were revealed, and although analysis of the finds and records is yet to begin, the plan suggests that this was a mausoleum for a wealthy citizen. Two burials were recorded nearby, and in a Roman roadside ditch 20m away a carved stone eagle grasping a snake in its beak was found. This is in almost pristine condition, and is the best-preserved work from a well-known Roman school of sculptors in the Gloucestershire area. LD
