Abstract:
An excavation was undertaken in 2012 within the grounds of the Bishops' Palace, beside the river Thames at Fulham in London. The project engaged the community from the outset, with one aim being to instruct members of the public in archaeological techniques. The research purpose of the investigation was to uncover evidence for the layout of the walled garden, from its creation in the 1760s onwards, to inform restoration. The history of the palace and grounds is outlined in the article '“ the site was originally part of an estate acquired from the Bishop of Hereford in AD 704, and bishops lived there as early as 1141. Project outcomes are than discussed, including successful engagement with different sectors of the community as well as the recording of features such as planting beds and pits and the recovery of associated finds. In addition, three bricked-up bee-boles were restored and returned to use. LD
