Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Describes a project led by archaeologists from Cardiff University and funded by the Connected Communities Programme run by the Arts & Humanities Research Council. Caerau, the largest Iron Age hillfort in South Glamorgan, is surrounded on three sides by social housing estates which now suffer from social and economic deprivation. The Caerau & Ely Rediscovering (CAER) Heritage Project was set up to explore Cardiff's prehistoric past and put local people at the heart of cutting-edge archaeological research, with key objectives being to use history and archaeology to develop educational opportunities, and to challenge stigma and marginalisation. In the first phase, local people joined in a variety of tasks, including geophysical survey of the hillfort, exhibitions, adult learners courses and the creation of heritage trails. The second phase involved large-scale excavations of the hillfort. The settlement evidence revealed by the excavations and some of the community benefits of the project are described and discussed in this article. LD | ||||||
