Abstract:		 The University of Winchester and Hyde900 '“ a charity formed in 2006 to celebrate 900 years since the foundation of Hyde Abbey in Winchester, Hampshire, in 1110 '“ claim to have identified remains from King Alfred the Great or his son Edward. A hip bone excavated in 1999 at the site of the abbey, where Alfred's remains were reburied in 1110, has been newly radiocarbon dated to a time consistent with his death in 899. This article summarises work that has been carried out in relation to human remains excavated at the abbey and also outlines the history of the site, including what is known of the treatment of human remains in the post-medieval period and excavations in the second half of the 19th century. The sequence of events is complex, and the case for the remains being those of Alfred or Edward has not yet been proven. LD
