Abstract:
Reports on excavations at the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum near Silchester in Hampshire, a site that has not been built on since it was abandoned after AD 400. A project by the University of Reading looking at a small part of the north-western quarter of the town began in 1997 and is to end this summer. Reasons for choosing this particular area included a hope that evidence for the late Iron Age oppidum of the Atrebates tribe would be found, and this proved to be the case with the identification of a succession of three great halls. Importantly, it was also discovered that the layout and property boundaries of the oppidum influenced the development of the town after the Roman conquest. In addition to further discussion of the excavation results, the article outlines the value of the project in offering training in field archaeology, and discusses its use of technology and some of the post-excavation work.
