Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The national heritage of the UK has been afforded a degree of protection for over a century. Since 1984, in England the work of protection, research and, increasingly, education and engagement has been vested in English Heritage, a grant-aided body at arm's length from government. A new model outlined in 2013 would see the National Heritage Collection, comprising over 400 properties, operated by a charity under lease from government, whilst the statutory functions of the current organisation would remain government funded, rebranded as Historic England. This article outlines the background to the proposals before considering in detail how each of the intended new bodies could viably operate following the split. LD | |
