Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The excavation of Second World War prison camps is becoming increasingly popular within the field of conflict archaeology, for example at concentration camps and prisoner of war camps in Germany, Austria and Poland. This article describes the first season of work at two more camps: Lager Wick, a forced labour camp in Jersey, and SS Strafgefangenenlager Falstad, a punishment camp in Norway, both established as a consequence of German occupation. At Wick, now the site of a nature reserve, the focus was on the site of the barrack huts, whilst at Falstad, where the main prison building still stands and is used as a memorial and human rights centre, the camp's rubbish dump was examined. It was found that archaeology had the potential to reveal remains of the Nazi camp system, even when no barrack blocks, fences or watch towers survived to show that anything was once there, and even when the remains had been deliberately removed by local people after the war. It is hoped that fieldwork such as that presented here will become more mainstream and help to raise awareness of the extent of the Nazi camp system. LD | |
