Abstract:
Presents a current example from the Council for British Archaeology's (CBA's) listed buildings casework: Galkoff Butchers in Liverpool. This grade II listed building was originally a Georgian townhouse. In 1907 it was bought by the Galkoff family and became a kosher butchers in the heart of the city's Jewish community. The cultural mix is apparent from the 1930s façade, which features lettering in both Hebrew and English. The green tiles of this shop front set within a Georgian townhouse make Galkoff's a nationally unique survival and are the reason for its listed status. The site has now been purchased by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine; as part of plans to extend its existing building, the School proposes to remove the ground floor façade to another site where it will be displayed as a standalone feature. Some of the issues that would arise should the proposal be permitted are outlined in this article. LD
