Discusses the issue of 'group polarization', fostered by the internet, with examples of the negative effects it can have on legitimate archaeologists and historians. Group polarization is a process whereby people who agree on something meet in isolation and, in extreme cases, build an eccentric consensus based on mutual ignorance and invention. The online spreading of allegations and often strongly worded insults can be hurtful, time-wasting, and damaging to an individual's reputation, and can also spread 'bad' archaeology. LD |
