Abstract:
Describes the results of a new geophysics study at Old Sarum, an early medieval settlement that preceded Salisbury in Wiltshire. Old Sarum is a prominent Iron Age hillfort, perhaps also the site of a Roman fort and town, and there is historical evidence for a late Anglo-Saxon burh and a mint. After the Norman conquest in 1066, the hillfort defences were adapted to protect a royal motte and bailey castle. A town and two successive cathedrals subsequently grew up in the western part of the fort, but it was thought that most people lived beyond the ramparts. The new study has made it clear that the entire outer bailey was heavily built up in the middle ages, including in areas of the site where only ephemeral settlement was previously proposed, and that geophysics can identify the plans and character of some of the structures. Further survey work is planned. LD
