Abstract:
The University of Cambridge's North West Cambridge development covers an area of 150ha, and this has been subject to archaeological evaluation and further investigations by the Cambridge Archaeological Unit over the last ten years, discovering nine major sites. This article offers a brief overview of the excavations, which revealed evidence for settlement and occupation from the middle Bronze Age until late Roman times. The project included a major outreach component with school visits, a public open day and a community excavation. There were also two artists in residence who, using volunteers, constructed a model village of the development's masterplan from cob. Their work and some further outcomes are outlined and some earlier artistic collaborations involving the CAU are mentioned. One of the artists in residence, Karen Guthrie, then gives a brief description of her impressions of archaeology and archaeologists following a week on site. LD
