Abstract:
Since 2005 archaeologists have been excavating at Blick Mead, a site beside the river Avon within the grounds of Amesbury Abbey in Wiltshire, located between the Iron Age Vespasian's Camp hillfort and the medieval town of Amesbury. Although no evidence for buildings has been seen, artefacts dating from the Neolithic to the Anglo-Saxon period have been found and, higher up, Iron Age field banks are present. Significantly, over 30,000 Mesolithic flint artefacts have also been recovered. Radiocarbon analysis of animal bones and charcoal found alongside these has indicated dates ranging from around 6,000 to 9,500 years ago. The flints suggest that Blick Mead was once a home base, a regular meeting point beside the river for mobile communities over many generations. The evidence for Mesolithic activity that has so far been uncovered is described in detail in this article and its importance is discussed in the context of the wider area. LD
