Abstract:
Our understanding of the Mesolithic in Britain is relatively impoverished compared with this period in the Netherlands, Denmark or Germany, because very few excavated sites have preserved biological remains. To address this, English Heritage (now Historic England) funded two projects, one in the wetlands of the Somerset Levels and one in the valley of the river Kennet, West Berkshire. Both projects were run as partnerships between several organisations, and both sites were investigated with geophysics, boreholes and test-pitting. The teams then focused palaeoenvironmental work on key Mesolithic horizons identified by radiocarbon dating. This article outlines the findings, in the context of earlier work in each area. Both projects demonstrated the value of a geoarchaeological approach leading to the discovery of waterlogged Mesolithic horizons directly adjacent to previously known flint scatters, and resulted in the identification of key sites to the benefit of future planning guidance and conservation.
