Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The UK government's recently published Spending Review 2015 asks non-protected government departments to consider the effects of cutting their budgets by 25% and by 40% within five years. This is likely to be followed by a continuation of lowered spending. The Department of Culture, Media & Sport is an unprotected department, and further cuts to the budgets of bodies such as Historic England and the Arts Council in England, as well as local authorities, appear likely. This article looks at what is already being done within the heritage sector in order to 'protect and survive'. Heritage 2020 in England comprises five working groups that are looking for ways in which organisations can benefit from working together within different areas of the sector; comparable initiatives are underway in Wales and Scotland. The roles of the Archaeology Forum, the Council for British Archaeology and the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists in addressing areas of concern for archaeology and related matters are also discussed.
