Abstract:
The Chauvet cave in southern France, which contains hundreds of wall-painted images that are mainly of ice age animals, has recently been inscribed on the World Heritage List. This article highlights debate between experts, including British Palaeolithic specialists Paul Bahn and Paul Pettit, over the age of the paintings. There is strong scientific evidence that the artwork was created around 37,500 to 33,500 years ago. Despite this, some argue that stylistically the paintings must be much younger. The situation is analogous to a recent ruling concerning a 19th century painting. Scientific analysis and historic accounts strongly support its being a work by Renoir, but the Wildenstein Institute has ruled that this is not the case as the painting 'does not fit the Renoir style'.
