Tests the hypothesis that there was greater tool standardisation in the Upper Palaeolithic than the Middle Palaeolithic using burins from each period. They were found to be equally standardised for both metric and non-metric traits. Further consideration suggests that most Palaeolithic flaked stone tools are poorly suited to test notions of standardisation, although some tool attributes may well be suited when considered in specific adaptive contexts.
