Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A research excavation to examine the applicability of archaeological techniques to the restoration of historic gardens was inaugurated in May 1989 for a duration of three years. The walled garden at Castle Bromwich Hall, West Midlands, was thought to be particularly suitable for this project, since it is proposed to restore the eighteenth-century formal garden for public view. The paper examines and analyses the performance of the archaeological techniques used on the project (including excavation, building and geophysical survey, soil analysis, environmental and pollen sampling, dating techniques and artefact studies) for the purpose of disseminating the conclusions quickly to other parties interested in the potential of archaeology as a tool for accurate garden restoration. Appendices give details of `Seeds recovered by environmental sampling' (97-8) and `Pollen recovered' (98-9). | |||||
