Abstract:		 An investigation of typological developments exhibited by the simple flowerpot, the most common ceramic find from post-medieval garden sites. An historical background to flowerpot production is followed by the garden accounts from Highclere house (Hants) for the period 1814 to 1834 which show the quantity, cost and suppliers for a large garden. Different types of flowerpot design are detailed and archaeological evidence for chronological development is given prior to a suggested chronological typology. Appendices cover, `Flowerpots (horticultural jars) recovered from archaeological excavation' (241-2), `Late nineteenth-centuyr prices and measures for plowerpots' (243-4), and a brief note on `Richard Sankey and Son Ltd, Bulwell, Nottingham' (244) probably the best known manufacturer of flowerpots in the world, established in 1855 and defunct by the late 1980s.
