Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Analysis of a map of Europe bound together with two books by Giraldus Cambrensis (c. 1146 -- c. 1223) -- Topographia Hiberniae and Expugnatio Hibernica -- in a manuscript volume in the National Library of Ireland (MS 700). Considers the possibility that Giraldus himself possessed the volume and that he may have had a `central role' in the map's creation c. 1200. Topographical features indicated on the map are then discussed. The over-emphasis on British, Irish, French and Italian place-names, together with the exaggerated size of the British Isles and the prominence given to Rome, are seen as indicative of the cartographer's concerns over Britain's political and religious relationship to Rome. Concludes that the map may reflect itineraries between Britain and Rome, possibly of Giraldus himself who travelled to Rome thrice between 1199 and 1203, to settle (unsuccessfully) his bid for the see of St David's. | ||||||
