Scallop shells found with thirteenth- or fourteenth-century burials have occurred in archaeological excavations at two locations in Ireland -- the Augustinian priory of St Mary at Mullingar (Co Westmeath) and St Mary's Cathedral at Tuam (Co Galway) -- while a pilgrim badge comprising a pewter scallop shell mounted with a bronze-gilded figure of St James was found at the Augustinian friary in Galway city. These finds indicate that the burials concerned are of individuals who had gone on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The cult of St James and Irish pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela are then considered from documentary sources, the majority of which are Continental (see also 95/1255). | |||||||||
