Abstract:
Discusses how archaeology can contribute to the study of the last three hundred years of Irish history by reference to a number of excavated sites. These include an early seventeenth-century planter's lot in the deserted plantation village of Salterstown, Co Londonderry; a deserted clachan settlement at Murphystown, Co Down; the eighteenth-century Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin; eighteenth- to twentieth-century tenant settlements at Gorttoose, Co Roscommon (see also 95/1436, 96/708, 97/910, 97/1785 & 97/1890); a nineteenth/early twentieth-century clay-pipe factory at Winetavern Street, Belfast; and four seventeenth- to eighteenth-century tanning pits in Coleraine, Co Londonderry. Reference is also made to the osteoarchaeological study of the skeleton of a man buried in nineteenth-century Waterford who had suffered from rickets (see also 92/1660). Concludes that though the study of post-medieval and Industrial archaeology in Ireland is only beginning, it has the potential to become a major research area in its own right (see also 98/1925).
