Abstract:
Outlines the origins and early history of Ireland's main military seasonal training camp which was set up in 1855 during the Crimean War. The temporary nature of the troops' huts in the 1850s, the activities of camp followers, the training of Edward, Prince of Wales there in 1861, the controversy arising from the government's desire to make the Curragh Camp permanent in the 1860s, the peripheral residence of soldiers' wives, prostitution, and the economic impact to nearby towns of the British Army's withdrawal in 1922 are all highlighted.
