Abstract:
Short notes on various items of Irish historical news. Includes `Northern exposure: Irishmen and Scandinavia in the seventeenth century' by Steve Murdoch (5--6), which highlights the previously neglected subject of Irishmen who had emigrated to Protestant Scandinavia in the seventeenth century where they acted as diplomats, students or (especially) as mercenaries. Examples of each class of emigrant are supplied and are derived from a relational database -- Scotland, Scandinavia and northern Europe 1580--1707. Argues that a similar database regarding Irish, English and Scottish migration to Catholic countries could be created for southern Europe using the extensive military, diplomatic and other documentary sources that survive in Continental archives.
