Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Compares and contrasts three exhibitions about the Insurrection of 1798 in Ireland held by the Ulster Museum (Up in arms), the National Museum of Ireland (Fellowship of freedom), and the National 1798 Visitor Centre, Enniscorthy (Co Wexford). The first two were temporary exhibitions set up to coincide with the Insurrection's bicentennial, while the latter is a heritage centre established to provide information about 1798 on an enduring basis. Concludes that while museums may learn from the visual presentations offered by heritage centres, museums bear greater cultural importance for their artefactual collections and the research that their staff carry out, thereby meriting greater funding.
