Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Scottish-born American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie (1835--1919) founded c. 2,500 libraries world-wide, 66 of them in Ireland. The history of Ireland's Carnegie libraries, which were mainly built in the early-twentieth century, is outlined in terms of their distribution, how Carnegie funding was acquired to build a library, and the people instrumental in having the libraries built in Counties Kerry and Limerick. Closes with the view that the libraries form an important part of Ireland's architectural heritage and that their study offers insights into early-twentieth-century Irish life. |
