Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Three registers recording the regulation of the trade in staple goods (such as wool and hides) at post-medieval Dublin are extant for the years 1596--1637 and 1664--78. This form of trade regulation is explained along with its secondary role of allowing traders to recover their debts. Cases of debtors living outside the jurisdiction of the staple (originally the towns of Dublin, Waterford, Cork and Drogheda) were often recorded in the registers of the Court of Chancery, five volumes of which survive (in the British Library) for the period 1618 to 1687. The details of each debtor and creditor have been extracted from these eight registers and entered into a relational database which has been published on CD--ROM. This accompanies the recently-published The Irish staple books, 1596--1687, which is edited by Jane Ohlmeyer and É Ó Ciardha. Whilst cautioning users to interrogate the database alongside other documentary sources, and to remember that the database is not a substitute for consulting the original registers, the accessibility of the record on CD--ROM and the researcher's ability to analyse the data rigorously with it is highlighted. | |||||
