Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
General summary of the militant nature of Irish society between the fifth and twelfth centuries as shown by a range of ecclesiastical evidence including annalistic references to wars, depictions of armed men on illuminated manuscripts and High Crosses, the penalties defined in early law tracts for attacking churches or churchmen, and the construction of both defensive enclosures around churches or monastic settlements, and of round towers. The growing urbanisation and secularisation of monastic settlements increasingly involved them in politics and therefore in wars not only against each other, but also in those between the rival dynasties who patronised them. | ||||
