Abstract:
Remains superficially similar to wood are sometimes observed on the surfaces of corroded iron objects from archaeological deposits. Scanning electron microscopy suggests that iron corrosion products have been deposited within the cell spaces with subsequent decomposition of the wood leaving casts which mirror the original structure.
