Abstract:
Report on the excavation and geophysical survey between 1992 and 1994 of a site south of the church in Baston village. The post-holes of a Saxo-Norman timber structure and an iron smithy were identified, and material from the ninth to mid-twelfth century was recovered, including pottery and animal bones. Medieval deposits from the mid-twelfth to mid-fourteenth centuries included stone walls, hearths and ovens, and grain pits, and material recovered included iron industrial residues, pottery, tiles, and animal and fish bones. The nature of the settlements and the significance of the various finds are discussed in detail. Specialist reports include
