Abstract:
An overview of the results of the 1995 excavations at Bull Wharf in the City of London. In conjunction with evidence from earlier investigations on adjacent sites, a sequence of waterfront developments from Roman to medieval periods is identified. Of particular interest is the Later Saxon occupation, which covers the period of King Alfred's occupation of the city and the rule of Æthelred of Mercia. Structures include revetments and a large and complex aisled timber building. Finds, including Alfredian coins and metalwork, are also mentioned.
