Abstract:
Report on excavation and survey of a late medieval defended chapel and presbytery in Kilmurry, Kilkenny (Co). The medieval Cill mhuire (Mary's Church) is now identified as Kilmurry Castle, rather than its hitherto supposed site in a nearby field, and was originally a chapel of ease belonging to the lords of Gorteens. The building was converted into a dwelling following the Cromwellian Settlement. Concludes that Kilmurry Castle may have been one of the three houses that William and Shane O'Crechane agreed in 1431 to build in the medieval parish of Rathpatrick for the Earl of Ormonde. Includes a discussion of other related sites in the modern parish of Slieverue, including Ballinlaw Castle, Drumdowney ferry slipway, Ringville House, the manor of Drumdowney, Gorteens Castle, the nunnery of Kilculliheen, Rathpatrick church, Tobar Mhuire (holy well), and the eighteenth-century Grey Cross (in Luffany).
