Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Stylistic analysis of a possibly early seventeenth-century tomb frontal recently discovered at Thomastown, Kilkenny (Co) (see also 2001/755 & 99/1827), suggests that it may have been made by a second stonecutter bearing the name Walter Kerin. Analysis of other Kilkenny (Co) tombs bearing the name or initials of `Walter Kerin' suggests that the earlier stonecutter was active c. 1577-1600, from which latter date the putative younger Kerin was at work. Stylistic grounds are used to link the panel with a covering slab for a tomb dated 1609, which is also found in Thomastown. One motif among the Symbols of the Passion displayed on the panel was initially interpreted as the Virgin and Child, but is now seen as the Pieta. | ||||||||
