Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Reports on a carved sixteenth-century tomb frontal bearing the coats of arms of the Butler and Cantwell families, the symbols of Christ's Passion, a representation of the scourging of Christ at the pillar (thought to be unique for Co Kilkenny), and a crucifixion scene. The slab is thought to belong to the tomb of Sir Piers Butler, eighth earl of Ormond, but the inclusion of the Cantwell arms is a mystery, since no marriage between a Butler and a Cantwell is known to historians. The carving is identified as the work of O'Tunney, or a member of the O'Tunney school. | |||
