Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Report based on a project carried out by two schoolchildren (Cronin & Hunt) which won an award in the Junior Section of the Youth Heritage competition of Co Kilkenny (1991). Describes a beehive-shaped building of corbelled drystone construction found in Castlegarden near Tullaherin, Co Kilkenny. Rare outside Ulster, this is the only surviving sweat-house in the county. Sweat-houses may range in date from the Neolithic to the nineteenth century AD. The Castlegarden site is overgrown and shows no sign of fires having been lit inside, though folk memory of its use as a sweat-house survives. It is proposed that the site be made a national monument. | ||
