Abstract:
Describes two images from Co Kilkenny, one carved in relief on limestone, the other on porcelain. The partly damaged stone image was found during a recent clean-up of St Rock's cemetery in Kilkenny City and is dated stylistically to the sixteenth century when funerary sculptures in Kilkenny and Callan were similarly executed by the O'Tunney family. The ceramic image is a small holy water font which now hangs in a private house in Co Carlow where it was brought from Callan in c 1920. It does not bear a maker's mark, but is thought to have been imported to Ireland from the continent in the eighteenth century. The position of the Dove over Christ's loincloth is unique in portrayals of the Trinity. A `Postscript' (1194) records the existence of another (twentieth-century) image in the Roman Catholic church in Durrow, Co Laois.
