Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Description of a limestone funerary monument erected for the family of John Rothe in 1612 originally inside a small chapel built close to St Mary's Church. When the church was altered in 1820, the Rothe monument was moved to the edge of the surrounding graveyard. A stone plaque with the Rothe coat of arms built into the new portion of St Mary's may have been part of the monument which is inscribed in Latin and bears depictions of both the Passion and SS Peter and Paul. Identifies the likely sculptor(s) with the O'Kerin family of Kilkenny and suggests that the skeleton found with a chalice inside the tomb in 1820 might have been that of David Rothe, Bishop of Ossory (d. 1650). The locations of the remains of both John Rothe and his wife are unknown. | ||||||||
