Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Excavations at an Early Christian church and associated tower house have uncovered the partial remains of a possibly circular building with evidence of iron working that may date to Early Christian times, an extensive Early Christian/medieval cemetery, and architectural details of both the church and the tower house. The church was enlarged in the thirteenth century and, following the Reformation, its west wall was demolished. The tower house was erected at the church's west end and new walls were built to join the two structures. The church may subsequently have served as an outhouse or byre until the eighteenth century when the site was abandoned. An unfortified wing was added to the tower house but was demolished and replaced with a new wing in the mid-seventeenth century. This formed the childhood residence of the philosopher George Berkeley (1685-1753). Finds included two re-used Early Christian cross slabs (see 92/580), dressed masonry, medieval local glazed wares and South Leinster pottery, a range of post-medieval pottery, seventeenth- or eighteenth-century clay pipe fragments, and items of metal, glass, and animal bone. | |||||||||||||||||||||
