Abstract:
Report on the find of part of a medieval coffin-shaped grave slab which had been placed under a pier of Blackfriars Bridge in Kilkenny. The slab is inscribed with Lombardic lettering and is decorated with an incised fleur-de-lis cross with two serrated leaves springing from the cross's stem. Concludes that the grave slab may have originated from a nearby Dominican friary and that its re-use must be recent due to the low level of weathering on the decorated part of the stone. The find is dated on stylistic grounds to the thirteenth or fourteenth century AD and its re-use for construction purposes is noted in the context of other recent finds in Kilkenny (see 94/619).
