Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Considers the origins of the cult of St Piran of Cornwall (and of Brittany, Wales and the Western Isles) whose Cornish Life identifies him as St Ciaran of Saighir (or Seir, Co Offaly), the founder of the diocese of Ossory in Ireland, and states that God had required him to end his days in Cornwall. However, the Gaelic and Latin Lives of St Ciaran of Saighir claim that he died instead in Ireland. Proposes that after his death, some companions or disciples of St Ciaran of Saighir promulgated his cult in Cornwall by founding a church and monastery there in his name, and that this gave rise to the Cornish cult of St Piran. | ||||
